Agência – Portuguese Short Film Agency brings two productions selected for the official competitions to Annecy 2026, showcasing a blend of visual experimentation, artistic research, and highly relevant contemporary themes.
Official Short Film Competition: World Premiere
The first title is Virgin Fandango (Virgem Fandango), the latest work by director Marcy Page, presented as a world premiere in the Official Short Film Competition. Co-produced by Blue Dada (Canada) and Ciclope Filmes (Portugal), the short film is an animated musical built around an original technique inspired by azulejos, the traditional Portuguese painted tiles. At the heart of the story is a rebellious Mary who joins her voice to those of celebrated female figures throughout history in the fight for equality.
Perspectives Short Film Competition
The second title, Because Today is Saturday (Porque Hoje é Sábado) by Alice Eça Guimarães, is competing in the Perspectives Short Film Competition. Produced through an international collaboration between Canada, France, Spain, and Portugal, the film explores the inner conflict of a woman struggling to reconcile domestic life with her desire to escape, offering a delicate and contemporary perspective on the challenges of everyday life.
With Virgin Fandango and Because Today is Saturday, Agência strengthens the presence of Portuguese animated cinema at Annecy, promoting productions that combine technical experimentation, authorial vision, and international collaboration.
